On May 22, 2010, Laszlo Hanyecz, a web-developer living in Florida, paid a user (jercos) from the Bitcointalk forum for no less than 10,000 BTC for two Papa John’s Pizza: “Being able to exchange [these bitcoins] for a pizza was extremely cool. […] No one thought it would become so important. ”
Laszlo had to wait 3 days before finding someone ready to sell him a pizza!
The pizza cost him $41 when the transaction occurred.
In April 2017, the same transaction was valued at $15.5 million. That’s why it’s called the most expensive pizza in the world!
Since then, to commemorate this historical transaction, May 22 is dubbed “Bitcoin Pizza Day”. Pizza providers worldwide offer discounts to bitcoin users to commemorate Laszlo’s purchase.
