When the infamous darknet marketplace Silk Road was shut down by the F.B.I on October 2013, the U.S. government seized roughly 144,000 bitcoins and the U.S. Marshals’ office announced that they will sell the seized bitcoins in a three-part auction.

The first auction of bitcoins was sold to venture capitalist and entrepreneur Tim Draper usafor exactly 29,656.51306529 bitcoins, worth $19 million USD at the time.
